About Modern Prop
Modern Prop is a sculptural design studio rooted in the love of propagation, geometry, and the quiet rituals of plant care.
Founded by Joe Culver—a sculptor, designer, and unapologetic goose enthusiast—Modern Prop began as an experiment in giving everyday plant tools the same level of attention, materiality, and presence as art objects. Each piece is designed and fabricated in-house using a blend of digital and traditional techniques: 3D printing, laser cutting, bandsaw shaping, hand-finishing, and a touch of compulsion.
Joe holds a degree in Sculpture from Detroit’s Wayne State University and spends his time in the heart of the city’s Cultural Center, working at the College for Creative Studies and drawing inspiration from the Belle Isle Conservatory, local architecture, Dungeons & Dragons, and the ecosystems both wild and made. In his free time, Joe enjoys tending to his plants, listening to psychedelic rock, drawing, and making Sculpture.
